The Medium

Introduction

The Medium is the title of an ongoing fiction project, with several original characters and an expansive setting. It is the world that most of my OCs live in.

Setting

Some time in the early 2000s, humankind was running out of energy. Research into renewable sources had not progressed. Combustibles were nearly depleted, and the world was on the brink of societal collapse, until a secret government research outpost in the south of the United States made an earth-shattering breakthrough. They had been exploring the concept of interdimensional energy extraction: harnessing unlimited energy from alternate dimensions. What they discovered instead would change everything.

Upon finally successfully tearing a hole in the fabric of reality, the scientists had to explore what was on the other side, but their drone data was astounding, and completely unexpected.

Where they had assumed would simply be an alternate version of the same physical location in another universe, they instead found a vastly different environment: an infinite plane of rolling hills and mountains and lakes, settled under a perpetually twilight-purple sky. The land was dotted with sparse, sometimes bizarre flora and fauna; absent any sun, the sky was filled not with stars, but the twinkling of countless other portals.
